Upfrica UK – Food Safety & Compliance Policy

Last Updated: November 27, 2025

1. Introduction

Upfrica UK is committed to ensuring that all food offered on our platform is safe, legal, and meets UK food hygiene regulations. Upfrica operates as an online marketplace — we do not produce, store, handle or package food. All responsibility lies with the individual seller who lists food items on the platform.

2. Food Business Registration (Mandatory)

Every seller offering food on Upfrica UK must register as a Food Business Operator (FBO) with their local council. Registration is free and must be completed at least 28 days before selling food.

  • Sellers must register with the correct local authority
  • Provide their Food Business Registration number on request
  • Update Upfrica if their FBO details change
  • Maintain all required food hygiene standards

Upfrica may suspend food listings from sellers who fail to register or provide required documentation.

3. Food Hygiene & Handling Responsibilities

Sellers are responsible for ensuring safe preparation, storage, and delivery of all food items they list on Upfrica. Sellers must comply with UK hygiene regulations, including:

  • Maintaining a clean and safe food preparation area
  • Preventing cross-contamination
  • Storing chilled food below 5°C
  • Storing frozen food at –18°C or below
  • Using secure, tamper-proof packaging
  • Ensuring staff have basic Level 2 Food Safety training

Upfrica may request proof of hygiene standards at any time.

4. Mandatory Food Labelling Requirements

All food listed on Upfrica must include correct, legal labelling. Sellers must list allergens clearly and comply with UK food information regulations (FIR & Natasha’s Law).

  • Full ingredients list
  • 14 mandatory allergens clearly highlighted
  • Best-before or use-by dates
  • Storage instructions
  • Name & address of the Food Business Operator
  • Country of origin (where required)
  • Batch or lot number for traceability

Listings lacking proper allergen or ingredient information will be removed.

5. Packaging & Delivery Safety

Sellers must ensure that:

  • Food is sealed securely to prevent tampering
  • Chilled foods remain at safe temperature during delivery
  • Frozen items arrive still frozen
  • Hot meals are delivered promptly
  • Delivery drivers understand basic food safety (if applicable)

6. Prohibited Food Items on Upfrica UK

Upfrica strictly prohibits the sale of any food containing illegal or unsafe ingredients, including:

  • Banned chemical ingredients
  • Foods requiring medical authorisation
  • Mislabelled or unlabelled food
  • Unsafe supplements or unapproved herbal mixes
  • Food prepared in unregistered kitchens

7. Upfrica Marketplace Enforcement & Compliance

To protect the public, Upfrica may take the following actions:

  • Remove or hide non-compliant food listings
  • Pause accounts that pose safety risks
  • Request documentation, certificates or inspection results
  • Report serious risks to Trading Standards or Environmental Health
